2018 Perennials at Schweikert Greenhouse

We like to grow a large varieties of perennials at Schweikert Greenhouse to help you have beautiful flowers year after year. We have many beautiful perennials that prefer sun or plants that prefer a shadier location. Below are a small sampling of some of the perennials we have this year.

Astilbe Cappuccino

An aptly named Astilbe out of Holland with large, foamy milk white flowers that seem to float atop a base of dark foliage. When coming into flower the leaves and stems turn almost black to provide the perfect contrast and then fade to a rich green in the weeks after flowering. Shade

Astilbe Red Sentinel

‘Red Sentinel’ is ready to stand guard in your garden border! With dark rose-red plumes, flowers rise above lush reddish-green foliage. This Astilbe blooms mid-season. Shade

Astilbe Younique Pink

Fragrant pale pink plumes top this shorter, more compact Astilbe. Its small size and rounded habit are perfect for containers. Brighten up shady areas with lots of colorful flowers. This uniform selection is more tolerant of heat and drought than other varieties. Shade

Autumn Fern

A bold and beautiful choice for shady borders and woodland gardens. A stunning dwarf fern with a flush of young papery fronds that emerge a copper-red color, then mature to a deep green.

Butterfly Bush Buzz Midnight

A dark purple-blue flower that resembles a dwarf version of ‘Black Knight’. Fragrant blooms abound from summer through fall. Plants stay 3–5 feet tall and compact foliage responds well to shaping. A great choice for containers.

Butterfly Bush Buzz Sky Blue

This elegant dwarf features full-sized pale blue flower spikes. Fragrant blooms abound from summer through fall. Plants stay 3–5 feet tall and compact foliage responds well to shaping. ‘Buzz™ Sky Blue’ is a great choice for containers.

Coreopsis Cosmic Eye

Part of the Big Bang™ series, ‘Cosmic Eye’ boasts yellow flowers with a wide dark burgundy banding surrounding a yellow center. The burgundy lightens toward the outer edge of the banding, adding dimension to the blossoms. It grows up to 20 inches tall, producing an abundance of flowers. Choose ‘Cosmic Eye’ to add “wow” to beds or borders. Plant it in moist, well-drained soil.

Coreopsis Cream & Red

Another in this series from Darwin, this Coreopsis sports a small eye of dark red on a large flower of buttery-cream. A well-mannered Coreopsis not getting above 14 inches. It will produce loads of these charming blooms all summer long even if it has not received a cool period.

Coreopsis Daybreak

Everything you could want in a dwarf Coreopsis. Bright bi-color red on gold flowers start before most begin blooming and finishes after most have stopped. It does all this on a neat little 12-inch tall plant that usually takes the form of a sphere of blossoms for most of the year. Excellent disease resistance and looks great mixed into pots and planters.

Coreopsis Gold & Bronze

An excellent series of very large flowered bicolored Coreopsis introduced by Darwin Perennials. ‘Gold & Bronze’ is the star of the series with the biggest flowers and most striking coloration. A large eye of deep bronze red is framed by gold, all on a foot-tall plant with a tidy habit.

Coreopsis Mercury Rising

Silky wine red flowers edged with a dark pink border. Blooms rise above bright green foliage from early summer through early fall. This variety is hardier than most red varieties and deer-resistant.

Coreopsis Yellow & Red

The Uptick™ series continues with another fine selection from Darwin Perennials. Produces the characteristic jumbo flowers with an eye of dark red surrounded by a halo of yellow. Bred with both the gardener and producer in mind, these Coreopsis are short and tidy, easy to grow and ship, and sure to be covered with flowers on the shelf and in the garden bed

Dicentra Bleeding Heart Amore Rose

Billowy mounds of bright rose pink flowers crowd over the lacy blue-green foliage to greet you in the garden. Vigorous and very hardy, ‘Amore Rose’ will please everyone with the abundant flowers and extended bloom time. So many flowers, so little effort!

Dicentra Bleeding Heart White Gold

With brilliant-white, heart-shaped flowers from golden leaves, this Dicentra is fresh and will brighten any shade garden. Its beauty, reliability and vigorous growth will delight you.

Echinacea Colorburst Orange

‘Colorburst Orange’ has it all – lovely double orange flowers and a medium short, well-branched habit. The anemone type double flowers open with centers that are dark green, then more lime-green, and then orange. First year plants are multistemmed. Excellent vigor. Flowers are very large and stems are extra strong. A very exciting Echinacea.

Echinacea Meteor Red

Lovely double red anemone-type flowers shoot upward from an upright, well-branched plant. Blooming heavily from summer until frost, we have found these equally at home in containers or in the border, finding them particularly useful in front of grasses to cover ungainly “feet”.

Echinacea Puff Vanilla

PUFF™ Vanilla, with it’s great crown count, blooms all summer until frost with double anemone type flowers with white ray florets and light yellow cone florets. The habit is low and mounding. Blooms early and blooms the first year.

Hibiscus Midnight Marvel

A truly superior Hibiscus in flower, foliage, and form. Intense scarlet flowers are set against exceptionally dark purple-black leaves. Instead of a few blooms crowding the top of the shrub, ‘Midnight Marvel’s’ flowers appear up and down a broader, more rounded form. It does best in full sun, and only in full sun does it achieve its darkest foliage.

Japanese Painted Fern

Beautiful mounds of dramatic foliage that will be standout in the shade garden. The dark, blue green central rib of each frond fades to silver at the edges. The short stature and spreading form is excellent for use foreground foliage and ideal for containers.

Leucanthemum Shasta Daisy Macaroon

The perfect little “cookie”, Leucanthemum ‘Macaroon’ forms a low, tight mound only 13″ tall and is well-branched with many stems. The double flowers start out yellow and open to bi-color white with yellow centers, then when fully mature are white with gold centers. Charming and useful in containers, edges and in mass.

Lewisia Constant Coral

The collection is called CONSTANT™ for two reasons, the plants continuously bloom from spring to fall and they are excellent survivors in normal greenhouse and nursery cultivation. CONSTANT™ Coral has coral pink flowers over vigorous deep green leaves. Easy to grow in the garden given good drainage.

Monarda Bee Balm Petite Delight

Lavender-pink flowers in July and August atop deep green, shiny and clean foliage. More compact than others in the species. Very low maintenance. Cherished by butterflies and hummingbirds, but loathed by deer. Also makes an excellent cut flower!

Yucca Colorguard

This variegated yucca features sword-like, olive-green leaves, each with a vibrant canary yellow stripe down the middle. In cool weather leaf edges have a pink tinge and the yellow stripe has a rosy hue. Fragrant, snow white flower spikes bloom in midsummer. Add drama to the border or containers with this drought-tolerant variety.

Heuchera Forever Purple

FOREVER® Purple is a knockout with ultra-purple glossy leaves with fluted edges and great vigor. Very short spikes of purple-pink flowers in summer and four seasons of purple. A real show stopper. Destined to become the new standard for purple foliage perennials.
